stefanik discussed stone pardon with president

New York representative Elise Stefanik discussed a presidential pardon for Roger Stone with President Trump during an Air Force One flight to Florida on May 27th. Stone, longtime friend and political aid to the president, was convicted of obstruction of justice, lying to Congress and witness tampering on November 15, 2019. He was sentenced to 40 months in jail in February.

Politico reports that the president told those traveling with him, to view a SpaceX launch in Florida, that he intended to grant clemency to Stone. Stefanik and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy argued against a presidential pardon prior to the November election. Florida congressman Matt Gaetz, also accompanying the president, advised in favor of immediate clemency.

Representative Stefanik, in a statement released on Thursday, denies the Stone exchange with the president took place.

On a recent Charlie Kirk podcast, Stone said, “Congressman Matt Gaetz from my home state of Florida, who I know was out there when Kevin McCarthy and Elise Stefanik were arguing against any clemency for Roger Stone because it might cost the Republicans seats.”
