Who is Tom Reed
Republican Tom Reed has spent his time in Washington defending and enabling Donald Trump. Reed is New York Chairman of Trump’s reelection campaign and was a vocal supporter of the president during Trump’s historic impeachment trial in the House of Representatives.
Reed founded medical debt collection company RR Resource Recovery in Corning, New York. Despite Congressional rules requiring Reed to cease practicing law, Reed maintains a financial interest in Corning’s medical debt collection company RR Resource Recovery as well as in Reed & Reed Properties, the company that rents RR Resource Recovery office space. And as Reed profits from collecting medical debt from his constituents, he has worked in Congress on two initiatives that would enhance his personal medical debt collection business while jeopardizing the average New York citizen’s financial and personal health.
Reed spearheads Republican efforts to gut the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the federal agency that regulates debt collection practices of companies like Reed’s RR Resource Recovery. This obvious conflict of interest and violation of Congressional ethics rules has not prompted Reed to divest himself of his interest in medical debt collection company RR Resource Recovery.
Reed has vociferously and tenaciously worked to repeal the Affordable Care Act, the Obama-era healthcare law that guarantees health insurance to 30 million Americans. Quality health insurance, such as that provided by Obamacare, dramatically lowers healthcare debt for Americans. Reed and his medical debt collection company RR Resource Recovery profit off of high consumer healthcare debt.
Throughout his career in Congress, Reed has put his personal financial interest, medical debt collection, above that of his New York constituents.
Tom Reed Voting Record
First and foremost, Reed has voted to eliminate pre-existing condition protection afforded by the Affordable Care Act, legislation that has protected American healthcare for over ten years. He voted for the American Healthcare Act of 2017 (H.R. 1628) which would have repealed Obamacare’s healthcare coverage and protection and eliminating health insurance coverage for millions of Americans.
As recently as December 2019, Reed voted against legislation that would allow the U.S. government to negotiate lower prescription drug pricing (H.R. 3). U.S. citizens have the highest drug costs of any industrialized nation in the world. Reed’s vote maintains prescription drug price status quo.
In December of 2017, Reed voted against common sense New York gun laws when she supported the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017. The Republican-sponsored legislation (H.R. 38) would gut sensible New York State gun regulation, allowing anyone, from anywhere to enter New York State with a concealed weapon. This legislation was universally opposed by U.S. law enforcement unions and organizations.
During his time in Washington, Reed has voted against raising the minimum wage (H.R. 582 July 2019), voted against humanitarian standards for people in the custody of Customs and Border Protection (H.R. 3239 July 2019) and voted against the basic right of Americans to the vote (H.R. 4 December 2019).
Tom Reed’s voting record demonstrates his allegiance to the agenda of the radical right.
