The argument for North Country voters to elect Democrat Tedra Cobb to represent New York’s 21st district in Congress is clear and compelling.
Who is Tedra Cobb
Tedra Cobb has lived in Northern New York for over 30 years, where she has focused on improving access to quality healthcare. Cobb worked for North Country AIDS Outreach, providing HIV/AIDS testing and education in rural communities and in 1999, she started a community health agency to provide access to critical health screenings and treatment. Cobb grew the organization, expanding access to health care to thousands of Northern New Yorkers.
While in the St. Lawrence County Legislature, Cobb authored substantial ethics reform and a successful initiative to lower the cost of prescription drugs. Her ethics work earned her an appointment to the New York State Committee on Open Government, where she worked to improve local government’s transparency and openness.
Health care is a passion for Cobb. She runs for Congress as Elise Stefanik has repeatedly voted against the interests of Northern New Yorkers. Stefanik has voted to kick millions off of their health insurance, to raise the cost of prescription drugs, and to allow insurance companies to discriminate against those with pre-existing conditions.
Who is Elise Stefanik
Republican Elise Stefanik has spent her time in Washington defending and enabling Donald Trump. Stefanik was a key member of Donald Trump’s defense team during Trump’s historic impeachment trial in the House of Representatives.
In June of 2020, Stefanik travelled to Tulsa Oklahoma to attend Donald Trump’s controversial June 20 campaign rally. The event was widely condemned at the time by public health experts as a coronavirus superspreader event. The Stefanik-supported Trump rally was subsequently linked to a spike in Oklahoma coronavirus infections. One-time Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain was diagnosed with COVID-19 less than two weeks after attending the Stefanik-supported Trump rally and subsequently succumbed to the disease.
Throughout her career in Congress, Stefanik has voted against the interests of her North Country constituents.
Elise Stefanik Voting Record
First and foremost, Stefanik has voted to eliminate pre-existing condition protection afforded by the Affordable Care Act, legislation that has protected American healthcare for over ten years. She voted for the American Healthcare Act of 2017 (H.R. 1628) which would have repealed Obamacare’s healthcare coverage and protection and eliminating health insurance coverage for millions of Americans.
As recently as December 2019, Stefanik voted against legislation that would allow the U.S. government to negotiate lower prescription drug pricing (H.R. 3). U.S. citizens have the highest drug costs of any industrialized nation in the world. Stefanik’s vote maintains prescription drug price status quo.
In December of 2017, Stefanik voted against common sense New York gun laws when she supported the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017. The Republican-sponsored legislation (H.R. 38) would gut sensible New York State gun regulation, allowing anyone, from anywhere to enter New York State with a concealed weapon. This legislation was universally opposed by U.S. law enforcement unions and organizations.
During her limited time in Washington, Stefanik has voted against raising the minimum wage (H.R. 582 July 2019), voted against humanitarian standards for people in the custody of Customs and Border Protection (H.R. 3239 July 2019) and voted against the basic right of Americans to the vote (H.R. 4 December 2019).
Elise Stefanik’s voting record demonstrates her allegiance to the agenda of the radical right.
